A day at the zoo

Met Mama N and her Baby Girl in the park today for a picnic, then we took the kids to the zoo. Sam had never been too a zoo, because last spring we were deep in the throes of Moon Over Buffalo, so we were at the theater from morning till late at night. Then it was summer, and always seemed too hot. I hate being around animals when it's hot. Ugh. But today was perfection. It was just warm enough, not a trace of humidity, not a cloud in the blue sky. B.G. handed Sam crackers. He pointed at the elephants. He pointed at the giraffes. He pointed at the lions, the tamarins, the leopard, the snakes, and the toucans. Then he fell asleep. Like, really asleep. He remained limp while I took him out of the stroller and loaded him into his car seat. Didn't open his eyes, didn't stir...nothing. He slept all the way home, while I got him out of the car, opened the house, took him into his room, laid him down in his crib, tiptoed out the door, and then BAM. The child sat bolt upright in bed, eyes wide open, as soon as I turned the doorknob. And those were the twenty minutes he slept today. Sweet husband took me to dinner tonight, and we sat outside, enjoying the amazing weather while Sam played with this duck his Grandma gave him. This duck, when its foot is squeezed, quacks "Here Comes Peter Cottontail." Once Sam figured it out, he made it sing over and over and over and over....
It was wonderful, sitting at a table on the sidewalk, people-watching, feeding Sam bites of spaghetti. I love spring.
We're spending tomorrow teaching a Shakespeare workshop at a high school in Rock Hill. There is almost nothing more fun than getting paid to talk about something you're crazy in love with. Especially with someone you're crazy in love with. Speaking of which, hottie husband got a haircut today. He looks way less homeless now. People had started offering to buy him coffee.
